Marcus Rashford has secured his first piece of silverware with Barcelona, just hours after his former club Manchester United suffered FA Cup elimination.
Super Cup Glory in Saudi Arabia
The England international came off the bench as Barcelona defeated arch-rivals Real Madrid 3-2 in a thrilling Spanish Super Cup final in Jeddah on Sunday night. The victory secured back-to-back Super Cup titles for the Catalan giants.
Former Leeds United winger Raphinha was the hero on the night, netting a decisive double, while veteran striker Robert Lewandowski was also on target. Rashford entered the fray for the final eight minutes of normal time and missed a late chance to extend the lead to 4-2 in the closing stages.
Taking to Instagram post-match, an elated Rashford wrote: “SUPER CUP CHAMPIONS What a way to start the year!!”
Rashford's Barcelona Future and United Stance
The 28-year-old forward joined Barcelona on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window. The deal includes an option for the La Liga leaders to make the move permanent at the end of the season for a fee in the region of £26 million.
Rashford has made no secret of his desire to stay in Spain. In an interview with Barcelona's official YouTube channel in October, he expressed his contentment and long-term ambitions.
“I'm really enjoying my time in Spain. The weather is the best part. It's a very big change,” Rashford said. “I hope to be here for a long time... I'm enjoying this football club and I think for anybody who loves football, Barcelona is one of the key clubs in the history of the game, so to play here is an honour.”
A Necessary Change After 23 Years at United
The striker reflected on his decision to leave Manchester United, the club he had been with for 23 years, suggesting the move was a necessary step.
“I feel like there's no time like the present now. People forget this, but 23 years of my life was with Manchester United. So sometimes you just need a change,” he explained. “I think maybe this is the case with me and yeah, I'm enjoying everything... I'm so hungry to keep improving.”
Upon his arrival at the Camp Nou, Rashford highlighted the winning mentality at Barcelona, stating: “This team has the foundations to achieve it... The mentality and motivation are high; I don't see any reason not to win all the trophies we play.” His first mission, lifting the Spanish Super Cup, is now complete.
