The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on July 19 that a service member died on July 18 during a controlled detonation of unexploded ordnance from a downed Iranian one-way attack drone in northern Iraq. A second service member suffered mild injuries.
Third US fatality in two days
This death marks the third US service member killed in two days. On July 17, two US soldiers were killed in an Iranian attack in Jordan, and a third went missing. CENTCOM reported that unidentified remains have been found at that location and are being identified.
The total number of US troops killed since the Iran war began on February 28 now stands at 17. The war started with joint US-Israeli strikes on sites across Iran.
Context of escalating conflict
Thousands of people have died in the conflict, mostly in Iran and Lebanon. The announcement came as the US attacked Iran for an eighth consecutive night, and Iran fired missiles and drones at US targets in the Gulf. Attacks have intensified after a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed on June 17 collapsed. The MoU aimed to end the war within 60 days, restore shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, and settle the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.
Iran withdrew from the MoU last week, citing US violations. US President Donald Trump declared the ceasefire "over" at a NATO summit in Türkiye, stating, "I don't want to deal with them anymore. They're scum."
