Rangers Boss Rohl Eyes Final Marquee Signing Before Deadline

Rangers Manager Prepares for Pivotal Transfer Window Conclusion

Rangers manager Danny Rohl is intensifying his focus on what he describes as the "crunch time" of the January transfer window, with the club actively pursuing at least two more additions before the deadline in under two weeks. The Ibrox side has already made significant moves, but Rohl believes there could be room for one more marquee signing to bolster the squad.

Strategic Signings and Squad Reinforcement

The Glasgow club has already demonstrated their ambition with the high-profile loan acquisition of Andreas Skov Olsen, the talented winger from Wolfsburg and Denmark. This move was complemented by the permanent signings of midfielder Tochi Chukwuani and left-back Tuur Rommens, representing a combined investment of approximately £7 million.

Rohl has indicated that the club's recruitment strategy might yield another signing of similar calibre to Skov Olsen. "I'm knocking on the door of the recruitment team every day to ask if there's something new," the manager revealed ahead of Thursday's Europa League encounter with Ludogorets.

Patience and Timing in the Transfer Market

The Rangers boss emphasised the importance of strategic timing during this critical period. "We've done a good job so far. We come to the crunch time in the transfer window and it's really about timing," Rohl explained. "Sometimes you have to be patient. It's good to have these three players here, now it's about timing. In the next seven to ten days, we have to be ready."

Rohl elaborated on the club's approach, suggesting they are waiting for the right opportunity to emerge. "We have a clear idea, now we have to wait, maybe there's a domino effect at the other club and then we can take this opportunity for us. Maybe there's someone who can bring an exciting signing in, but it's a lot of ifs and maybes, let's wait."

Forward Options and Tactical Flexibility

When questioned about the possibility of adding another striker to the squad, Rohl provided insight into his tactical thinking. "As a manager, you're always happy with your players. This is my job, to give them the belief, give them the support. To sign a striker means it should be the right one, also the right fit."

The manager highlighted the value of versatile attacking players who can operate in multiple positions. "I think we have different profiles, maybe we can find a player who can play in two or three positions and in all those three positions he is dangerous. This is helpful and this is what I said after the cup game, we need players around the strikers to score more."

Rohl pointed to existing squad members who have begun contributing goals, while expressing optimism about Skov Olsen's potential impact. "I think Thelo Aasgaard has started to do that, hopefully Djeidi Gassama and Mikey Moore can continue and score more goals for us. This is a part of the reason we moved for Skov. I expect we can score more with him because it's a different profile. He will give us assists because of his calmness on the ball."

Potential Departures and Squad Management

Rangers have already facilitated loan moves for Lyall Cameron to Aberdeen and Findlay Curtis to Kilmarnock, with the latter's transfer currently being finalised. The club continues to explore opportunities to move on several players, including:

  • Danilo
  • Kieran Dowell
  • Joe Rothwell
  • Rabbi Matondo
  • Clinton Nsiala
  • Nedim Bajrami

Rohl addressed the balancing act between arrivals and departures, stating: "It's a good thing that we have some players in, but for some players they need game time. I think that was part [of the decision] with Lyall. He made in the last couple of weeks a really fantastic job, it was not easy for him, but he took this very professionally. That's what I liked, and I think it's important now that he gets the minutes."

The manager anticipates further movement in both directions during the final week of the window. "Now we will see in the next seven to 10 days, I think there will be some movements in and out. But now we come a little bit to the crunch time in the transfer window, and, again, then it's really about timing."

Scottish Cup Controversy Involving Stranraer

In related Scottish football news, Stranraer have lodged an appeal with the Scottish FA after receiving a notice of complaint that could result in their expulsion from the Scottish Cup. The issue stems from their fielding of an ineligible player during their penalty shootout victory over Queen's Park, which had secured them a fourth-round trip to Ibrox.

The controversy centres on goalkeeper Lyndon Tas, who joined on loan from Hearts hours before Tuesday's rearranged fixture. Competition rules stipulate that for postponed matches, new players must have been registered by the original fixture date unless signed on an emergency loan basis.

Stranraer's statement explained their position: "Agreement had been reached with Hamilton Academical for Josh Lane to feature in the Scottish Cup 4th Round on Saturday, but this was refused for the rearranged fixture on Tuesday night. With only one goalkeeper in our playing squad, we acted quickly in good faith to recruit a goalkeeper on loan with help from Heart of Midlothian."

The club will present their case to an SFA panel, arguing that Tas's signing qualified as an emergency loan. Should their appeal fail and expulsion occur, Queen's Park would be reinstated, potentially setting up another memorable encounter with Rangers after their famous victory at Ibrox last season.
