Nottingham Forest have sacked head coach Ange Postecoglou after just 58 days in charge, making his tenure the shortest among permanent managers in Premier League history. The decision was made by owner Evangelos Marinakis during Saturday's 3-0 home defeat to Chelsea, with Postecoglou informed of his dismissal soon after the hour mark.
Marinakis, who left the City Ground early, had been considering Postecoglou's future since the humiliating Europa League loss to Midtjylland before the international break. The Australian's 39-day spell in charge (58 days including pre-season) surpasses Les Reed's 40 days at Charlton Athletic as the shortest for a permanent manager, though Sam Allardyce's 31-day interim stint at Leeds in 2023 was shorter.
Forest have already sounded out potential successors, including Sean Dyche and Roberto Mancini. Dyche, a former Forest trainee, lives near the City Ground and has assistants Ian Woan and Steve Stone, both ex-Forest players. Mancini, who led Manchester City to their first Premier League title in 2012, has been out of work since leaving the Saudi Arabia job 12 months ago.
Marinakis is also a long-standing admirer of Fulham manager Marco Silva, whom he appointed at Olympiakos. Silva's contract, which expires at the end of the season, contains a reported £8m buyout clause. Forest are willing to pay compensation but remain mindful of profitability and sustainability regulations after sacking a second manager in two months and spending around £200m on 13 new players this summer.
Postecoglou replaced Nuno Espírito Santo, whose relationship with Marinakis soured over the appointment of Edu as global head of football. The 60-year-old said his goodbyes to players in the dressing room and posed for photos with fans as he left the stadium. Forest hope to have a new manager in place before Thursday's Europa League match against Porto, having taken just one point from their first two group games.
