Paul Pogba Returns to Action After Four-Month Injury Layoff
Paul Pogba has emphatically declared that he "feels great" and has pledged to assist Monaco for the remainder of the season, following his return from a lengthy spell on the treatment table. The 33-year-old midfielder made his comeback during Monaco's 4-1 defeat to Paris FC on Friday night, entering the pitch for the final 21 minutes of the match. This appearance marked his first minutes on the field since December, ending a frustrating four-month period sidelined by injury.
Warm Reception and Personal Reflections
Despite Monaco trailing 3-1 when he was substituted on, Pogba received a heartwarming ovation from both sets of supporters as he stepped onto the pitch. In post-match comments, Pogba expressed his delight at returning to competitive action and acknowledged the emotional impact of the crowd's cheers. "On a personal level, it’s always good to be back on the pitch and try to help my team," Pogba stated. "The cheers from the crowd really warmed my heart. Of course, I was focused on my own game, but I heard them clearly and it was really nice."
Pogba has been limited to just four appearances for Monaco since joining the club in the summer, accumulating a mere 51 minutes of playing time due to persistent fitness issues. The principality side offered him a career lifeline after he served an 18-month doping ban, which he previously described to Daily Mail Sport as "hell." Pogba has consistently maintained his innocence regarding the doping allegations.
Commitment to Monaco and Future Focus
Addressing speculation about his future, Pogba dismissed suggestions that Monaco might terminate his contract, which runs until 2027, at the end of the current campaign. "I’m here to help the team as much as possible until the end of the season," he affirmed. "I’m still here, so from what I’ve heard, we’re in it for the long haul. For me, I’m only focused on the upcoming matches, getting fit, and helping the team."
Pogba also conveyed his disappointment over Monaco's heavy loss to Paris FC, a result that leaves the club fifth in the table, positioned two places and three points away from automatic qualification for next season's Champions League. Monaco officials had conceded in January that their plan to restore Pogba to full fitness after two years without a competitive match had "not worked as expected."
Background on Pogba's Recent Challenges
The midfielder's return comes after a calf injury kept him out of action for four months, with his last appearance prior to Friday dating back to December 5. Pogba was originally handed a four-year doping ban in February 2024 following a failed drugs test in September 2023. After an appeal, the ban was reduced to 18 months, though his lucrative £200,000-per-week contract with Juventus was terminated as a result.
Eligible to resume playing from March 2025 onwards, Pogba eventually secured a move to Monaco in June, signing a two-year deal. This transfer allowed him to play domestic football in France for the first time in his professional career, having originally left Le Havre for Manchester United at the age of 16. As he continues his journey back to peak fitness, Pogba remains determined to make a meaningful impact for Monaco in the closing stages of the season.
