Paul Pogba Speaks Out on Family Feud and Career Challenges
Former Manchester United midfielder Paul Pogba has publicly addressed the profound impact of a bitter family feud and his recent doping ban, expressing a desire to emerge stronger from these hardships. In a candid interview on the Rio Ferdinand Presents YouTube channel, Pogba reflected on the extortion plot involving his older brother, Mathias, who was convicted in December 2024 for attempting to extort the World Cup winner.
Extortion Case and Family Turmoil
Mathias Pogba received a three-year jail sentence, with two years suspended, avoiding immediate imprisonment. Instead, he was required to wear an electronic tag for a year and fined £16,500. The case stemmed from a 2022 incident where Paul Pogba was kidnapped and robbed by masked, armed men demanding €13 million (£10.98 million) for so-called protection services. Alongside Mathias, five other individuals were found guilty in 2024, receiving custodial sentences ranging from four to eight years for their roles in the meticulously planned extortion scheme.
Pogba revealed that during the investigation, he paid €100,000 (£84,423) to the organised group. He also denied sensational claims made by Mathias, including allegations that Pogba hired a witch doctor to cast a spell on France teammate Kylian Mbappe and had abandoned his family. Reports from French media indicated that the extortionists aimed to discredit Pogba through these accusations.
Personal Struggles and Public Perception
When asked whether the family feud or his 18-month doping ban was the greater personal challenge, Pogba emphasized the difficulties of being sidelined from football. He described the ban, which he previously called hell, as particularly tough due to public perception. People hear about doping and testosterone without wanting to know the real story, Pogba lamented, highlighting how media narratives shaped opinions against him.
The feud took a significant toll on their mother, Yeo, whom Pogba credited as the family pillar. She gained weight and lost weight, that's how difficult it was, he explained, noting that parental distress is inevitable when siblings argue. Pogba expressed gratitude for her unwavering support, alongside his wife and children, during this turbulent period.
Career Moves and Current Situation
The case emerged while Pogba was playing for Juventus, after leaving Manchester United as a free agent in 2022. In a 2024 interview with Daily Mail Sport, Pogba admitted he had considered joining rivals Manchester City but decided to leave the city following a burglary at his home and the extortion attempt. Now 33, Pogba is rebuilding his career with Ligue 1 side Monaco, having returned to the game last summer after his doping ban.
However, his comeback has been hampered by injury problems, limiting him to just four appearances totalling 51 minutes. Despite these setbacks, Pogba remains focused on moving forward, emphasizing the importance of family reconciliation and personal resilience.
