Parkinson Slams VAR Calls After Wrexham's Chelsea FA Cup Loss

Wrexham Manager Phil Parkinson Criticises VAR Decisions in Chelsea FA Cup Loss

Wrexham manager Phil Parkinson has voiced his frustration over what he described as incorrect VAR and referee calls during his team's dramatic 4-2 extra-time defeat to Chelsea in the FA Cup on Saturday. The Championship side were knocked out of the competition after two controversial video assistant referee decisions went against them at a crucial stage of the match.

Controversial Red Card Overturn Sparks Outrage

The first major incident occurred in stoppage time with the score level at 2-2. Referee Peter Bankes had initially shown Wrexham midfielder George Dobson a yellow card for a challenge, but after being advised by VAR to review the incident on the pitchside monitor, he changed his decision to a red card, reducing Wrexham to ten men.

Parkinson questioned whether the ruling needed altering, stating: "The referee gave a yellow. I'm not sure of the rules, it's the first time we've had VAR and it has to be clear and obvious to overturn it. I think the referee could have just kept it at a yellow."

Disallowed Goal Adds to Wrexham's VAR Agony

Wrexham then suffered further VAR disappointment when Lewis Brunt's potential equaliser was ruled out for offside during extra time. This double blow effectively ended their hopes of causing an upset against the Premier League giants.

Speaking after the match, Parkinson reflected on his team's performance: "In the second half I think we were the better team and I was confident we were going to win. I said at the break in extra time there are still going to be chances for us. Unfortunately we didn't take one but we have to take a lot of heart from that performance."

Wrexham's Impressive Cup Run Comes to an End

Despite the disappointing result, Parkinson highlighted the positives from Wrexham's FA Cup campaign, which included eliminating Premier League side Nottingham Forest on penalties in the third round. Against Chelsea, Wrexham had taken the lead twice through goals from Sam Smith and Callum Doyle.

"I'm very pleased with the way we acquitted ourselves tonight," Parkinson said. "We showed a lot of good aspects to our play and played some great football. We weren't just coming here to stop Chelsea - we believe we can play. The lads have given a lot tonight and to play extra time with 10 men is really hard."

Parkinson added: "It's been a great cup run. Tonight was a great spectacle and we were competitive against a very good side. We will take a lot of positives from it."

The match, broadcast on TNT Sports, provided dramatic entertainment for viewers but left Wrexham supporters and management feeling aggrieved about the officiating decisions that ultimately contributed to their elimination from the competition.
