Oxford United Sack Gary Rowett as Championship Relegation Looms

Oxford United have dismissed manager Gary Rowett with the club languishing in 22nd place in the Championship, two points adrift of safety. The decision follows a dismal run of one win in ten matches, culminating in Saturday's defeat at Charlton Athletic.

Rowett, who previously managed Birmingham City, Derby County, Stoke City and Millwall, was appointed on 20 December 2024 after Des Buckingham left for the Premier League. Buckingham had guided Oxford to promotion from League One in the 2023-24 season. Rowett successfully kept the club in the second tier last term, but this season has proved far more challenging.

Club chairman Grant Ferguson expressed gratitude for Rowett's efforts but acknowledged the need for change. "Gary joined during a challenging period and deserves immense credit for the hard work and leadership that saw us retain our Championship status last season. However, following a disappointing run of results, we have had to take this difficult decision in the best interests of the club," Ferguson told the club's website.

He added: "On behalf of the board, I would like to place on record our thanks to Gary and Mark for their contribution to the football club and to wish them all the best for the future."

Craig Short has been placed in interim charge ahead of Oxford's Boxing Day fixture at home to Southampton. The club have won just one of their ten league games since the start of November, leaving them deep in relegation trouble.
