Open Championship Could Finish Early to Avoid World Cup Final Clash

The 154th Open Championship at Royal Birkdale could finish earlier than usual on Sunday, July 19, if England are playing in the World Cup final later that day. The R&A is considering adjusting tee times to avoid a clash with the football match, which is scheduled to start at 8pm BST in New Jersey.

Normally, the final round leaders tee off around 2:30pm BST, but the R&A has been flexible with tee times in the past. Mark Darbon, the R&A chief executive, said in April: “We’re conscious of other events happening on that date. Some things are out of our control in terms of play-offs and the like, but we will attempt to avoid a clash.”

Potential Play-Off Complicates Scheduling

If there is a tie after 72 holes, a three-hole play-off will be held, followed by sudden death if still tied. This could further delay the finish and increase the overlap with the World Cup final. The R&A is monitoring the situation closely.

Record Crowd Expected with New Fan Code of Conduct

A record crowd of around 300,000 is expected at Royal Birkdale in Southport. The R&A has introduced a new fan code of conduct called 'The Open Commitment', which is built on five principles: Respect the Players, Respect the Links, Respect Each Other, Be Aware, and Enjoy Responsibly. Serious or repeated breaches may result in removal from the course.

Darbon stated: “The atmosphere at The Open is unlike any other major sporting event and one of the things that makes it so unique. It is built on a shared respect for the players, the course, fellow fans and the traditions of the Championship. Every year, our fans play a huge part in creating that experience. The Open Commitment isn’t about changing what makes The Open so special, it is about maintaining its long-standing traditions. By following a few simple principles, everyone can help ensure The Open remains a welcoming, respectful and unforgettable experience for all.”

England’s World Cup Campaign

England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, are competing in the World Cup in the United States. If they reach the final, it will be played on Sunday, July 19, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. The R&A’s decision to potentially move tee times aims to allow golf fans to also watch the football.
