Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has accepted the role of head coach at Championship side Blackburn Rovers, in an arrangement that will see him continue his duties with the national team. The 56-year-old will balance Blackburn's battle against relegation with preparations for Northern Ireland's World Cup play-offs.
O'Neill will take charge of Rovers, currently 22nd in the Championship table and level on points with Leicester City just above the relegation zone. His first match in the dugout is expected to be Saturday's trip to Queens Park Rangers. The deal mirrors O'Neill's previous experience at Stoke City in late 2019, where he initially combined both roles before the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted plans.
Northern Ireland face a crucial World Cup play-off semi-final away to Italy in March, with a potential final against Wales or Bosnia-Herzegovina for a spot in the summer tournament. O'Neill's side is aiming for their first World Cup in 40 years. The demanding schedule includes this weekend's club match and the Nations League draw earlier this week, which paired Northern Ireland with Hungary, Ukraine, and Georgia.
In a statement, O'Neill expressed gratitude to the Irish FA for supporting the dual role, describing it as a forward-thinking approach. He said being involved in daily club football would keep him sharp and provide closer visibility of Championship players, many of whom are in his national squad. Blackburn have been under interim management since Valerien Ismael was sacked in early February.
O'Neill previously guided Stoke out of relegation trouble after joining mid-season in 2019. He returned for his second spell as Northern Ireland manager in December 2022 and recently marked his 100th match in charge.
