Omar Souto, Who Convinced Messi for Argentina, Dies

The world of football is in mourning following the sad passing of Omar Souto, the former Argentinian FA manager who played a historic role in securing Lionel Messi for the national team. Souto died on Sunday at the age of 73.

The Man Who Brought Messi Home

Omar Souto's legacy is inextricably linked to one of football's greatest talents. He is widely recognised as the first person from the Argentinian Football Association (AFA) to make contact with a teenage Lionel Messi at Barcelona. At the time, the young prodigy was also being courted by Spain, having moved to Catalonia around the age of 13.

Recalling the pivotal moment in a 2021 interview, Souto described how a tip-off from the Spanish coaching staff during a youth tournament prompted his mission. He recounted searching for Messi's number, eventually tracking him down through a series of phone calls to his family in Rosario. Souto remembered the relief in the voice of Messi's father, who told him, "Finally, you’re going to call him up. My son wants to play for the Argentine National Team."

A Life Dedicated to Albiceleste

Souto's contribution to Argentine football extended far beyond that single, crucial intervention. He dedicated more than 30 years of his life to the AFA, serving as the historic Manager of Argentina's National Teams. His unwavering commitment was celebrated just last month at an emotional awards ceremony.

Following the news of his passing, the AFA released a touching statement, saying: 'With great sorrow and sadness, the Argentine Football Association announces the passing of Omar Souto... Simply thank you, Omar. Thank you for your solidarity, your unparalleled commitment to the Albiceleste and for being a true role model.'

Messi's Heartfelt Tribute

The impact of Souto's work is embodied in the legendary career of Lionel Messi. The Inter Miami forward, now 36, has made 196 appearances for Argentina, scoring 116 goals and leading his country to victory in both the FIFA World Cup and the Copa America.

Messi paid a moving tribute to Souto on social media, sharing a photo of the pair together with the World Cup trophy from Qatar 2022. He wrote: 'You were always there and were the person who paved the way for the AFA to take notice of me. An incredible human being, impossible to forget for all of us who had the privilege of being with the national team. We will never forget you, Omar. Rest in peace.'

The football community has lost a foundational figure, whose foresight and determination helped shape the destiny of a national team and one of the sport's all-time greats.
