NYU's Historic 91-Game Unbeaten Streak Snapped by Scranton in NCAA Final Four
New York University's historic 91-game winning streak has come to a dramatic end after a 60-52 loss to Scranton in the Final Four of the Division III NCAA Tournament on Thursday night. This defeat concludes one of the longest unbeaten runs in the annals of college basketball history, spanning more than three years and over 1,100 days without a loss.
Violets' Bid for Third Straight National Title Falls Short
The NYU Violets, with a season record of 29-1, entered the semi-final seeking a third consecutive national championship. Their streak was the second-longest in NCAA history, trailing only the University of Connecticut's 111-game run from 2014 to 2017. However, Scranton, boasting a perfect 32-0 record, advanced to the title game by holding off a late rally from NYU.
Head coach Meg Barber, who led the team through this incredible journey, expressed pride in her squad. "Heck of a ride, incredible journey," Barber said. "I'm incredibly proud and I just want to go back to [give credit to] Scranton. I knew this was going to be a really tough matchup. They're an incredible team on paper and we really parallel each other in so many ways and that's a tough team to play."
How NYU Built an Unlikely Dynasty in Division III
The streak was particularly notable given NYU's context in Division III, where athletic scholarships are not permitted, and the university is better known for its academic prowess than athletics. Until recently, the team played home games in borrowed gyms across New York City before moving into the John A Paulson Center in 2023.
Barber, a former NYU player, returned to her alma mater in 2018 and transformed the Violets into a national powerhouse. Her strategy centered on a full-court defensive system and a fast-paced, unselfish offense. This season, NYU had been overwhelming opponents, winning games by an average of more than 35 points, and broke the Division III record for consecutive wins with their 82nd straight victory on 8 February.
Game Highlights: A Tough Battle Against Scranton
In the semi-final, NYU struggled to gain momentum against a resilient Scranton side. The Violets got off to a slow start, trailing 30-18 at half-time as Scranton dictated the tempo. Although NYU cut the deficit to three points early in the third quarter, Scranton responded each time they threatened.
Down by 13 in the fourth quarter, NYU mounted a final push, closing to 56-52 with 46 seconds remaining. However, Scranton's composure proved decisive, with Meghan Lamanna converting key free throws to secure the win. Senior Caroline Peper led NYU with 19 points, becoming the only player on the roster who had previously lost a college game.
"This team really means the world to me," a tearful Peper said afterwards. "I couldn't have picked a better team to go out with."
Recognition from Legends and the Legacy of the Streak
Even UConn coach Geno Auriemma, whose program holds the only longer winning streak in NCAA history, praised NYU's achievement. "Doing something exceptionally well and doing it every day you have to do it is way, way, way more difficult than people think," Auriemma said earlier this month. "People say, 'Well, it's Division III.' I don't care if it's Division 12. People say it's the conference they play in. None of those things are relevant."
The defeat marks the end of a dominant era for NYU, which had not lost since 11 March 2023, when they were beaten by Transylvania in the Elite Eight. During their streak, the Violets established themselves as the premier program in Division III, winning back-to-back national titles and regularly dispatching opponents by wide margins.
