Nick Pope Replaced By Aaron Ramsdale After Newcastle Error

Nick Pope is not in Newcastle's squad for the match against Everton after sustaining a groin injury in training, with Aaron Ramsdale taking his place. The goalkeeper was beaten by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in midweek's Champions League defeat to Marseille after rushing out of his box.

Pope missed out on the matchday squad after injuring his groin during Friday's training session. Ramsdale, who joined from Southampton in the summer following the club's relegation, will make his first Premier League start of the season.

Manager Eddie Howe confirmed the injury, stating: 'We were training yesterday and Nick Pope felt something in his groin. It wasn't initially an issue but seized up after training. He'll be going for a scan in the next few days.'

Howe also addressed the competition for the goalkeeper position, describing it as 'on a knife-edge'. He emphasised the need for consistency in selection, saying: 'I need to think long and hard about who I pick. I'll try and do that on merit. You don't necessarily naturally try to rotate a goalkeeper, it's a position of consistency.'

Defending Pope's overall performance, Howe noted: 'His goalkeeping has been very good. His shot-stopping has been incredible. A lot of those saves are under-rated and go under the radar. The life of a goalkeeper is always on a knife-edge. You're judged on a couple of moments.'
