NHL Eyes London Return: League Considers UK Games Amid International Push
NHL Eyes London Return for Regular Season Games

The National Hockey League is seriously considering a triumphant return to London, with high-level discussions underway about bringing regular-season games back to the UK capital.

Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly confirmed to The Independent that the league is actively exploring opportunities for international games, with London being a prime candidate. While no formal announcement is imminent, the league's interest in returning to London is genuine and ongoing.

Building on Past Success

The NHL last visited London in 2007 when the Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings faced off at the O2 Arena in two historic regular-season contests. Those games marked a significant milestone as the first NHL regular-season matches ever played in Europe.

"We have had various discussions over the years about returning to London," Daly stated. "We continue to believe it's a market that would support our game well."

International Expansion Strategy

The league's international ambitions extend beyond London. The NHL has already announced games in the Czech Republic for October 2024, where the New Jersey Devils will face the Buffalo Sabres in Prague.

This forms part of the NHL's broader strategy to expand its global footprint and bring live hockey to international markets. The success of previous European games has encouraged the league to consider additional locations, including the UK.

What This Means for British Hockey Fans

A potential London series would feature:

  • Multiple regular-season games counting toward league standings
  • Top NHL teams featuring star players
  • Games likely hosted at the O2 Arena or another major venue
  • Full NHL game experience with entertainment and activities

While specific teams and dates remain undetermined, the league's confirmed interest suggests British hockey fans could see the world's best players on home ice sooner rather than later.
