Coronation Street viewers have taken to social media to plead with producers to make new character Melanie Driscoll a permanent fixture, following her explosive debut on Wednesday night. The mother of Will and Ollie Driscoll arrived in Weatherfield at the request of her son Ollie, immediately clashing with her mother-in-law Maggie.
Melanie, played by actress Cindy Humphrey, wasted no time confronting Maggie over the grooming scandal involving her youngest son Will and disgraced teacher Megan Walsh. In a heated exchange at the Rovers Return, Melanie accused Maggie of failing to protect her grandson, saying: 'The fact that my youngest is being groomed on your watch!'
The tension escalated when Melanie revealed she had been in contact with Finlay, Maggie's other son, who allegedly told her about Maggie's dark past. Maggie is known to have killed her husband Alan by pushing him down the stairs decades ago in Ireland, a secret that now threatens to unravel.
Fans were quick to praise the new character, with one writing on X: 'I’m loving Melanie so far, it’s only her first episode but I love her snappy personality.' Another added: 'I hope she becomes a permanent addition to the show.' A third commented: 'Sounds like Melanie isn’t gonna be going anywhere anytime soon. She’s not taking any of Maggie’s s***, and that’s iconic.'
The arrival of Melanie comes as the soap gears up for a highly anticipated murder week, which will see one of several characters killed off. Among the potential victims are Carl Webster, Theo Silverton, Megan Walsh, Jodie Ramsey, or Maggie Driscoll herself.
Coronation Street airs weeknights at 8:30pm on ITV1 and ITVX.
