Everton secured their first away win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Newcastle United at St James' Park on Monday night. Thierno Barry scored from close range four minutes into the second half, his eighth goal of the season, after a fine build-up involving Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who was the best player on the pitch. Jordan Pickford made a save in the closing stages, and Newcastle finished with 10 men after Jacob Ramsey was sent off for two yellow cards.
Moyes fumes after throw-in incident
With just under 20 minutes remaining, David Moyes was far from happy. Barry went down inside the Newcastle box after a challenge from Fabian Schar, which could have been a penalty on another night. As play continued with the forward still down, Everton kicked the ball out to allow Barry to receive treatment. Anthony Elanga then took a quick throw-in to Joelinton, who looked to charge up the pitch.
Moyes stepped onto the pitch while remonstrating with fourth official Robert Madley. Referee John Brooks stopped the game to allow Everton's medical staff to treat Barry, then booked Moyes for leaving his technical area. Newcastle gave the ball back to the Blues to restart play.
Tarkowski reminds Joelinton of cup clash
Midway through the first half, James Tarkowski reminded Joelinton of his reaction when he was thrown to the floor during Thursday's 3-1 defeat. Joelinton was substituted with 15 minutes of normal time remaining on Monday, with his side chasing an equaliser.
Tarkowski, like everyone else at St James' Park, could not believe his side were not ahead at the break. With the last kick of the first half, Harrison Armstrong fired well over, and Tarkowski shook his head in disbelief as he headed down the tunnel.
Shearer's prediction backfires
Alan Shearer praised Everton after the match, writing on X: "Well done Everton. Much better than Newcastle. Nothing at all from the Toon. Very very poor." However, his pre-game prediction for Betfair was wrong, as he had backed a home win, saying: "I'm going to go home win just. I think it'll be a really, really tight game but I'm going to go for a home win and hopefully they can bounce back and take their revenge after the loss in the cup to Everton on Thursday evening."
Everton supporters were loud throughout, with Spirit of the Blues and other chants sung from the away end. After the game, one member of the press was caught miming the tune of Spirit of the Blues in the mixed zone.
