Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed officers were called to reports of an assault on Mansfield Street in Ashton-under-Lyne at 8.08pm on Tuesday, November 3. Emergency services attended and a man was taken to hospital for treatment. The Manchester Evening News understands the man's injury was a laceration to his hand caused by a knife. GMP says no arrests have been made so far.
Residents describe chaotic scenes
Residents have described the chaotic scenes on their 'quiet' street as armed police descended following the knife attack. Amna, 21, a student and resident on Trafalgar Street, told the M.E.N: “As soon as I opened the door, all I heard was ‘shut the door, get in please’ - that was it. The police were here for around an hour. No one has gotten to know anything.”
Another resident on the street, Ali, 29, said: “When I went and looked out onto the street all the police officers were armed.” He added: “There were around six or seven police cars.”
Community concerns and reassurance
Residents contacted the Labour Councillor for St Peter’s Ward, Cllr Atta Ul-Rasool, to express their concerns following the armed police presence. In a Facebook post on Tuesday, November 3, Cllr Ul-Rasool said he had spoken to officers, who were unable to discuss operational details. However, he said they had reassured him there was "No wider threat to the local community".
According to an anonymous resident, the street normally has “no issues”. She said: “I heard shouting, the street was closed off and that’s it. They should inform the residents of what’s happened, so they can get peace of mind and know how it’s been dealt with. It’s a really lovely neighbourhood, really friendly and everyone minds their own business, so for this to happen with nothing said is very confusing.”
Residents seek answers
Dipti Plal, 40, a retail worker on Trafalgar Street said the residents whose door was knocked on moved to the street around two months ago. She said: “What we saw yesterday was unexpected. We are curious to know more about it because we live on the street. It’s a very good place.”
Michelle Ward, 30, said her children were woken up by the noise of police between the hours of 9pm and 11pm. “They were banging on one door, shouting ‘it’s armed police’,” she says. “Only a few days ago a car set alight, and now armed police, when it’s a quiet residential area. It feels like something’s going on on the street, and you overthink it when you’ve got kids.”
Cllr Ul-Rasool described in a Facebook post on Saturday, October 31, that a fire incident near the Hill Biscuits Factory had “involved a vehicle some distance away from the site”.
A GMP spokesperson said: "At 8.08pm last night (03/11/2026) we were called to reports of an assault on Mansfield Street, Ashton-under-Lyne. Emergency services attended and a man was taken to hospital for treatment. Enquiries are ongoing."
