Former Porto striker Benni McCarthy has publicly called on his old manager Jose Mourinho to issue an apology for what he described as "very wrong" comments regarding an alleged racial abuse incident involving Real Madrid forward Vinicius Jr.
Controversy Erupts After Champions League Clash
The controversy stems from Tuesday's Champions League match between Real Madrid and Benfica, where Vinicius Jr claimed he was racially abused by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni. Following the game, Benfica head coach Jose Mourinho suggested that Vinicius Jr had provoked the alleged abuse with his goal celebration after scoring the only goal of the match.
McCarthy's Strong Criticism
In an interview with BBC Sport, McCarthy, who played under Mourinho during their time together at Porto, did not hold back in his condemnation. He stated that Mourinho's remarks were inappropriate and demanded immediate retraction.
"For someone of Mourinho's stature to make such comments is very wrong," McCarthy told the BBC. "He should apologise to Vinicius Jr and acknowledge the seriousness of racial abuse in football. Victim-blaming has no place in our sport."
Uefa Investigation Underway
European football's governing body, Uefa, has confirmed it is currently investigating Vinicius Jr's allegation. The probe is ongoing ahead of next week's second leg between Real Madrid and Benfica, adding further tension to the high-stakes fixture.
This incident highlights the ongoing challenges football faces in combating racism, with high-profile figures like Mourinho facing scrutiny for their public statements on sensitive matters.
