Former Arsenal star Paul Merson has launched a blistering attack on his old club's game plan, admitting he finds it "extremely hard" to back them in the upcoming title showdown with Manchester City. The Gunners travel to the Etihad Stadium on Sunday for a match that could decisively shape the Premier League championship outcome.
Merson's Scathing Verdict on Arsenal's Attack
Merson, a pundit for Sportskeeda, did not hold back in his assessment of Arsenal's recent performances. He highlighted a severe lack of pace, urgency, and attacking intent within the squad, which has seen them stumble in the final stretch of the season. Despite reaching the Champions League semi-finals, their unconvincing draw against Sporting Lisbon midweek only deepened concerns.
"Apart from Declan Rice, I don’t see anyone else being expressive on the pitch," Merson stated bluntly. "There is no pace in that team, no urgency, no desire to get inside the box. They look nervous and what a bad time to be that way."
Title Race Hangs in the Balance
Arsenal currently hold a slender advantage at the top of the table, knowing that avoiding defeat against City would keep their destiny in their own hands. However, Merson warns that adopting a defensive, draw-seeking mentality at the Etihad would be catastrophic.
"If Arsenal go to the Etihad, sit behind the ball, absorb all the pressure and try to play for a draw, they will get destroyed by City!" he emphasised. "Even if they have a go and lose the game, it at least gives them confidence. Imagine if they sit behind the ball and lose 1-0? I don’t think it does any good for their confidence."
Pressure Mounts on Arteta and Squad
The north London club are under immense pressure to end their trophy drought and avoid another second-place finish. Merson's critique underscores the growing anxiety around Arsenal's ability to handle high-stakes matches, with their grip on top spot loosening after a run of three losses in four games prior to the Sporting draw.
He confessed that while his heart hopes for a draw, his head predicts a Manchester City victory. "I’m desperately trying to make a case for Arsenal, but I’m finding it extremely hard to do so," Merson admitted, pointing to the team's nervous and uninspiring displays.
Defensive Solidity Versus Attacking Flaws
Merson acknowledged Arsenal's defensive strengths, noting that not losing the game could effectively seal the league title for them. In contrast, City must win to keep their hopes alive. Yet, he remains sceptical about Arsenal's overall resilience if they suffer a defeat, suggesting it could derail their remaining fixtures.
The pundit's comments reflect broader concerns about Arsenal's late-season collapse, which threatens to leave them empty-handed yet again. As the weekend clash approaches, all eyes will be on whether Mikel Arteta's side can defy Merson's grim predictions and rise to the occasion.
