Rory McIlroy has delivered a succinct and witty response to the persistent questioning over his menu selections for the prestigious Masters Champion Dinner. The 2025 Masters winner, who claimed his first green jacket last year, has finalised the culinary offerings for this year's event at Augusta National, sparking curiosity about the absence of more distinctly Irish fare.
The Menu That's Making Headlines
McIlroy's inaugural champion dinner menu presents guests with a lavish array of options. For appetisers, players can choose from peach and ricotta flatbread, rock shrimp tempura, bacon-wrapped dates, or grilled elk sliders. The starter course features a delicate yellowfin tuna carpaccio, while the main offers a choice between wagyu filet mignon and seared salmon. Dessert is a singular, indulgent offering: sticky toffee pudding accompanied by vanilla ice cream and warm toffee sauce.
This gourmet spread will be paired with champagne and a selection of premium wines. Reports indicate that McIlroy's dinner is valued at approximately £251 per person, positioning it as potentially the most expensive Masters Dinner in history. This figure represents a significant increase, roughly three times the cost of Scottie Scheffler's menu from the previous year.
"Because I Want to Enjoy the Dinner as Well"
The Northern Irish champion, born in Holywood, County Down, has faced repeated inquiries about why his menu does not lean more heavily into his heritage. During a press conference on Tuesday, McIlroy addressed these queries with characteristic humour. "People keep asking me, 'Why didn't you go more Irish?'" McIlroy recounted. "And I say, 'Because I want to enjoy the dinner as well.'"
This nine-word retort succinctly captures his pragmatic approach to the celebratory meal. McIlroy also revealed that the inclusion of the peach and ricotta flatbread was influenced by a suggestion to provide a vegetarian option. "I think that one was probably for Gary Player," he added, referencing the legendary golfer known for his health-conscious lifestyle.
Defending Champion Enters With Relaxed Mindset
Despite entering the 2026 Masters as the defending champion, McIlroy finds himself positioned as the joint-third favourite at 12/1 odds. He trails behind Scottie Scheffler (11/2) and Jon Rahm (10/1), and shares his odds with Bryson DeChambeau and Xander Schauffele.
When discussing the unique experience of returning to Augusta with the green jacket, McIlroy expressed a notable shift in perspective. "For the past 17 years, I could not wait for the tournament to start," he stated. "This year, I couldn’t care if the tournament never started... Doesn’t make me any less motivated to try to win, but just more relaxed about it all."
Reflecting on his monumental victory from twelve months prior, McIlroy shared, "It feels absolutely incredible. Can't believe it was 12 months ago that I was sitting here and trying to take it all in. To be able to come back and do this press conference in a green jacket, that feels pretty good. It's been an amazing 12 months taking this thing around the world."
The Masters Champion Dinner remains a cherished tradition, where the previous year's winner hosts a private meal for fellow champions. McIlroy's menu, while a departure from expected Irish staples, reflects his personal taste and a desire to ensure an enjoyable experience for all attendees, including himself.
