The star running back, playing against the team that traded him three years ago, was instrumental in securing the win that keeps the 49ers in playoff contention with an 8-4 record.
Overcoming Early Obstacles
The 49ers' victory didn't come easily despite McCaffrey's brilliance. Quarterback Brock Purdy endured a difficult first half, throwing three interceptions - two to Panthers defender Jaycee Horn.
Remarkably, the Panthers could only convert these turnovers into three points, failing to capitalise on Purdy's uncharacteristic mistakes. The first half ended with San Francisco holding a 10-3 advantage despite their quarterback's struggles.
McCaffrey's Dominant Display
McCaffrey's connection to the game was evident from the outset, with the 49ers feeding him the ball on their first five offensive plays. This strategy paid immediate dividends as they scored their first opening-drive touchdown of the season against Carolina.
The versatile back finished with 89 yards rushing and 53 receiving, marking his tenth 100-yard game of the season. He's now just two such performances shy of the franchise record he established last year.
His most significant contribution came on a 12-yard touchdown run that extended San Francisco's lead to 17-3 in the second half, essentially sealing the victory.
Panthers Miss Crucial Opportunity
For the Panthers, who fell to 6-6 on the season, the defeat represented a missed chance to claim sole possession of first place in the NFC South division.
Quarterback Bryce Young, coming off a franchise-record 448-yard performance the previous week, managed just 169 passing yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Young did connect with Tetairoa McMillan on a 29-yard touchdown pass in the second half, but Carolina failed to convert the subsequent two-point attempt. The young quarterback's night ended disappointingly when he threw his second interception to Ji'Ayir Brown while driving with a chance to cut into the 20-9 deficit.
The 49ers adopted a conservative approach after Purdy's rocky start, relying heavily on McCaffrey and short passing plays. This tactical adjustment proved successful, with kicker Matt Gay adding a late field goal to secure the comprehensive victory.
