Bryan Mbeumo has completed his £71million move to Manchester United from Brentford, and the Cameroon international has revealed how Cristiano Ronaldo inspired his career. Mbeumo said the first football shirt he owned was Ronaldo's iconic No.7, and he dreamed of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“My first top was one with Ronaldo behind [on the back],” Mbeumo said. “When I was really young, the two best footballers were Ronaldo and Messi. When I was growing up, Neymar. After that, it was Eden Hazard.” The 25-year-old, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season, now hopes to emulate his hero at Old Trafford.
Off the pitch, Mbeumo is a different character. He enjoys playing piano and chess, describing himself as “a little mix” of quiet and loud. “I discovered the piano a few years ago, when a friend was playing and I wanted to try,” he said. “With chess, I played a little bit when I was younger. I have a board at home but I have no-one to play with.”
New signings at United traditionally perform a song in front of the squad, and Mbeumo hinted he could incorporate his piano skills. “Maybe I can play the piano and sing!” he said. “I know I’m a calmed and chilled guy out of the pitch, but on it I change completely.”
Mbeumo also reflected on his upbringing in a small town, regularly visiting his first club to inspire young players. United finished 15th last season, their worst Premier League finish, and Mbeumo will be key to their revival.
