Kylian Mbappe's future at Paris Saint-Germain has been thrown into fresh doubt after details emerged suggesting his contract extension is effectively a two-year deal, with the third year optional only for the player. The revelation, reported by L'Equipe, means the 23-year-old will enter the final year of his contract next summer, reigniting speculation over a move to Real Madrid.
PSG announced in May that Mbappe had signed a three-year extension until June 2025, ending months of flirtation with the Spanish giants. However, the new reports indicate the forward is only committed until 2024, with the option to extend by a further year solely at his discretion. This leaves the door open for Real Madrid to revive their pursuit of the World Cup winner.
Mbappe grew up supporting Real Madrid and came close to joining them in 2021, when PSG rejected a world-record bid of over €220 million. The French club pulled out all the stops to keep him, offering a lucrative package reportedly worth £42.5 million per year plus a £153 million loyalty bonus and full control of his image rights. Even French President Emmanuel Macron urged him to stay, telling Mbappe he was 'very important to the country'.
Despite the efforts, Mbappe has not ruled out a future move to Madrid. In a recent interview with the New York Times, he said: 'You never know what is going to happen. I've never been there but it seems like it's my home or something like that.' With Karim Benzema turning 35 in December, Real Madrid may see Mbappe as the long-term successor to lead their attack.
