The captain's second-period brace took his career tally to 421 goals, surpassing the legendary Mats Sundin's mark of 420.
A Historic Night for the Maple Leafs Captain
Matthews etched his name into the record books in his 664th regular-season game, a remarkable feat considering Sundin required 981 appearances to set the previous benchmark. The American centre expressed humility after the game, stating the achievement "means a lot" for a player in such a "historical franchise."
His record-tying goal came at 9:30 of the second period, levelling the score at 1-1. Matthews skated past Islanders defenceman Scott Mayfield, shifted the puck from backhand to forehand, and slid it past goaltender David Rittich. The record-breaker followed just 7 minutes and 49 seconds later. Stationed for a one-timer, Matthews emphatically buried a precise cross-ice pass from Bobby McMann to put Toronto ahead.

Despite Matthews's historic performance, the night ended in disappointment on the scoreboard. Matthew Schaefer scored twice for the Islanders, including the winner in the final minute of overtime, sealing a 4-3 victory for New York.
