The potential January exit of Manchester United striker Joshua Zirkzee has been plunged into doubt following a major managerial change at Old Trafford.
Amorim Exit Changes the Landscape
The sacking of manager Ruben Amorim this week has dramatically altered the situation for the Dutch forward. Zirkzee, 24, had been strongly linked with a loan move to Serie A side Roma after falling out of favour under the Portuguese coach.
However, with Amorim now departed, the player's prospects of reviving his career in Manchester have received a significant boost. This shift has complicated negotiations for the Italian club, which is actively seeking attacking reinforcements.
Roma Director Admits Complicated Situation
Roma's director, Ricky Massara, has publicly acknowledged that the deal for Zirkzee is now far from straightforward. Speaking to Sky Sport Italia, Massara confirmed the club's interest but highlighted the changed circumstances.
"He is a Manchester United centre-forward liked by many clubs, not just us," Massara stated. "Naturally, the situation is different after this change of management. There are no contacts in progress."
Massara indicated that Roma are pursuing other options, including Napoli's Giacomo Raspadori and a player from Atletico Madrid, with timing affected by the Spanish Supercup.
Zirkzee's United Struggles and Teammate Support
Zirkzee joined Manchester United in July 2024 from Bologna for a fee of £36.5 million. Since then, his return has been underwhelming, with just nine goals scored in 63 appearances for the club.
Despite his struggles, he retains the backing of his teammates. Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha recently offered public support following the draw with Leeds United.
"Josh is a pleasure. I feel like he has a lot of quality," Cunha said. "We need him. He needs to understand this and then everyone can count on him. After the goal last week and the assist today, I think it will give him confidence."
The striker, who still has three-and-a-half years remaining on his contract, was also linked with a move to Premier League rivals Everton this month.
With the Roma move now in question, Zirkzee may get opportunities to impress any incoming manager. United face Burnley on Wednesday before an FA Cup tie against Brighton this weekend, offering potential chances for the Dutchman to stake his claim for a future at the club.
