Ruben Amorim has emerged as a surprise favourite in the betting odds to become the next Manchester United manager, following a shift in the market. The Sporting Lisbon boss, previously not considered a frontrunner, has seen his odds slashed amid speculation over Erik ten Hag's future at Old Trafford.
Amorim, 39, has impressed in Portugal, leading Sporting to the Primeira Liga title last season. His tactical acumen and ability to develop young players have caught the attention of United's hierarchy, who are reportedly considering a change after a disappointing start to the campaign.
The development comes as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer expressed his shock at the club's decision to sell Scott McTominay to Napoli in the summer. The former United manager, speaking on the Stick to Football podcast, questioned the logic behind offloading the Scottish midfielder, who had been a key squad player.
Manchester United currently sit 14th in the Premier League table after seven matches, with pressure mounting on Ten Hag. The club's board is believed to be monitoring potential replacements, with Amorim now among the leading candidates alongside other names like Gareth Southgate and Thomas Tuchel.
However, any move for Amorim would likely require a significant compensation package, as he is under contract with Sporting until 2026. The Portuguese club are expected to resist any approaches mid-season, complicating United's pursuit.
