Carrick warns Rangnick of 'biggest job in football' at Manchester United

Michael Carrick has warned incoming interim manager Ralf Rangnick about the scale of the task awaiting him at Manchester United, describing the role as 'the biggest job in football'. Rangnick is set to begin his six-month spell as interim manager next week, tasked with salvaging United's faltering season.

Carrick, who took temporary charge after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking, oversaw a crucial 2-0 Champions League win at Villarreal and will lead the team for Sunday's daunting trip to Chelsea. He emphasised the privilege and responsibility of managing the club, saying: 'It is a massive job. For me, it is the biggest job in football.'

The former United midfielder acknowledged the team's current league position is far from title challengers but insisted the squad has potential, pointing to their second-place finish last season. 'It wasn't that long ago that we finished second in the league and were on a really good curve of improvement,' he said. 'Having a poor run of results is very different to being a poor team.'

Rangnick is expected to implement significant changes, including a countdown clock to support his 'eight-second rule' training method aimed at increasing intensity and pressing. His first match in charge could be against Arsenal on Thursday, subject to a work permit.
