Man Utd's £4m signing Thompson scores first goal

Tynan Thompson scored his first goal for Manchester United as the Under-19s drew 1-1 with Roma in the UEFA Youth League on Tuesday afternoon.

The winger, signed from Tottenham in the summer for £4 million plus a potential £4 million in add-ons, showed little emotion as team-mates mobbed him following a first-time half-volley that gave the Roma goalkeeper no chance.

Goal caps settling-in period

Thompson had registered three assists before the Roma match but had yet to score. His goal followed a well-timed run into the box and capped an impressive display out of possession.

The 18-year-old joined United shortly after suffering a family bereavement, and the club's coaches are aware of his personal circumstances and have helped him settle. He has trained with the senior side on a few occasions but has predominantly worked with the Under-21s at Carrington.

First-team pathway

Thompson contributed 13 goals and six assists in 26 appearances for Tottenham last season. The add-ons in his United deal will only be triggered when he reaches specific milestones with the senior side.

United currently have Marcus Rashford and Matheus Cunha on the left wing, though Rashford has struggled with injuries since the start of the season.

The 1-1 draw leaves United's hopes of progressing from the Youth League group stage in doubt. They face Sporting Lisbon away and RB Leipzig at home and must win both to give themselves a chance of reaching the knockouts.
