Manchester United are pushing to appoint an interim manager by early next week as the club weighs up candidates to take temporary charge following the sudden dismissal of Ruben Amorim.
Amorim's Abrupt Exit and the Search Begins
The Old Trafford hierarchy parted ways with Amorim less than 24 hours after last Sunday's 1-1 draw with Leeds United. The Portuguese coach's 14-month tenure was abruptly ended, with his explosive pre-match press conference comments overshadowing the match at Elland Road.
United's plan is now to install a caretaker boss until the summer before selecting a permanent successor to Amorim, who was himself chosen to replace Erik ten Hag.
Solskjaer and Carrick in the Frame for Sensational Returns
The club has held face-to-face talks with former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer about a potential sensational return. Solskjaer, who was sacked by United in December 2019, previously served as an interim boss before landing the job permanently and is now considered a favourite for the short-term role.
Also under serious consideration is Michael Carrick, who was a key part of Solskjaer's coaching staff during his previous spell. Carrick has also been spoken to by the club's decision-makers.
Other Contenders and Potential Complications
Another former United figure, Ruud van Nistelrooy, is also believed to be on the shortlist, although sources close to the Dutchman suggest he feels he is lower down the pecking order.
One potential hurdle in reappointing Solskjaer is assembling his backroom team. His previous successful setup included Carrick, Mike Phelan, and Kieran McKenna—the latter now managing Ipswich Town—making a reunion complex.
In the meantime, Darren Fletcher has taken temporary charge. He oversaw the midweek 2-2 draw at Burnley and will be in the dugout again for Sunday's FA Cup third-round tie against Brighton at Old Trafford. His steady hand could yet see him asked to continue in the role.
With talks advancing, an appointment is expected imminently as United seek stability for the remainder of the season.
