Ruben Amorim has been accused of taking a risk that no other Premier League manager would by signing Senne Lammens. The Belgian goalkeeper joined Manchester United on transfer deadline day for £18.2 million from Royal Antwerp, as Andre Onana is set to leave on loan to Trabzonspor after a series of mistakes.
Former United and Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster warned that starting Lammens in the Premier League would be a dangerous decision. 'He's played about 60 first-team games in his career and they're expecting him to adapt to not only the Premier League, but Manchester United as well. It's such a risk,' Foster said on his Fozcast podcast.
Lammens, 23, kept seven clean sheets in 30 appearances for Royal Antwerp last season, winning the Belgian league's player of the month award twice. He believes he can bring stability to United's defence. 'I think if you want to be a good goalkeeper, you have to be a rock behind the defence. That is something I take pride in,' he said.
However, Real Madrid and Belgium star Thibaut Courtois has endorsed the signing, calling Lammens a 'huge talent'. Speaking via Rio Ferdinand's YouTube channel, Courtois said Lammens' style is well-suited to the Premier League, though he acknowledged his lack of experience.
