Manchester United have categorically ruled out selling captain Bruno Fernandes this summer, according to reports. The Portuguese midfielder, who has just a year remaining on his contract at Old Trafford, had been linked with a move away, but club chiefs have now informed him that they do not want him to depart under any circumstances.
United had previously been willing to cash in on the 31-year-old, who has admirers in Saudi Arabia. However, following a December interview in which Fernandes admitted he was 'hurt' by the club's stance over a potential sale, the hierarchy have changed their position. They have told Fernandes they want him to be the centre of a successful United side and believe that Champions League qualification would help convince him to stay.
Fernandes' current deal includes a €65 million (£56.5m) release clause that can be activated by an overseas club. His contract runs until 2027, with an option for a further year. Despite the uncertainty, Fernandes has underlined his happiness at Manchester and has been a key player this season, recording eight goals and 19 assists in all competitions under manager Michael Carrick.
