Man United vs Atletico: Shaw and Mainoo doubts for UCL clash

Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo are doubts for Manchester United's Champions League clash at Atletico Madrid after missing Monday's training session at Carrington.

Both players started in Saturday's 1-1 draw with Tottenham at Old Trafford, but their involvement in Tuesday night's match in the Spanish capital is now in serious doubt.

Training absence and injury concerns

Neither Shaw nor Mainoo took part in the session as the squad were put through their paces on Monday morning. Shaw was substituted in stoppage-time against Spurs and was later spotted limping as he left Old Trafford, while Mainoo completed the full 90 minutes.

Michael Carrick is due to name the travelling squad and is expected to provide an update on the pair in the news conference on Monday evening.

Left-back dilemma

If Shaw misses a second Champions League match in succession, it would leave the head coach with a selection dilemma at left-back, as Patrick Dorgu and Noussair Mazraoui are also sidelined.

Carrick could move first-choice right-back Diogo Dalot to the opposite flank, making minimal changes to the defence that started at the weekend. Alternatively, Lisandro Martinez could move across, or Ayden Heaven and Harry Amass could be handed starts.

Midfield and attack options

In midfield, United are well placed to cope if Mainoo misses out. Carlos Baleba could make his full debut after a substitute appearance against Spurs, and Andrey Santos is pushing for more minutes having not featured in the two games either side of the international break.

Bryan Mbeumo put forward his case to continue up front in the absence of Benjamin Sesko with a goal at the weekend, but Amad Diallo and Matheus Cunha are at risk of making way for Marcus Rashford and Joshua Zirkzee.

Predicted lineups and team news

Predicted Manchester United XI: Lammens; Yoro, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Tielemans, Baleba; Amad, Fernandes, Cunha; Mbeumo.

Injured: Ugarte, Dorgu, Sesko, Mazraoui, Heaton. Doubts: Shaw, Mainoo, De Ligt.

The match takes place at the Metropolitano Stadium at 8pm BST on Tuesday, October 12, 2026, and will be shown on Amazon Prime.
