Antoine Semenyo's first-half stoppage-time goal was enough to give Manchester City a narrow 1-0 victory over Leeds United at Elland Road, moving Pep Guardiola's side to within two points of Premier League leaders Arsenal.
The decisive moment arrived in the first minute of added time when Semenyo capitalised on a loose ball in the box to slot home. Leeds had defended resolutely for much of the half but were ultimately undone by the Ghanaian's composure.
The match ended in chaos as Leeds manager Daniel Farke was sent off by referee Peter Bankes for running onto the pitch to protest. Farke was visibly incensed, though the cause of his anger was not immediately clear. Leeds assistant Eddie Riemer later said the red card was 'very harsh' and attributed the outburst to frustration over perceived time-wasting and a lack of stoppage time for a set piece.
Guardiola, meanwhile, expressed mixed emotions. While delighted with the win, he criticised the scheduling, sarcastically thanking the authorities for allowing City to play at 8pm instead of 3pm, leaving less recovery time before their Champions League clash with Real Madrid. 'We have a big gap... but we are going to deal with that,' he told Sky Sports.
Match-winner Semenyo said: 'We just want to win all of the games on our side... Leeds are very tough, it was a great win.' The result leaves Leeds in 15th, though their cushion over the relegation zone remains intact after West Ham lost at Liverpool earlier.
