A spectator has been arrested following a shocking incident at a high-profile women's basketball game in London, where a young fan was struck by an indecent object hurled from the crowd.
The event unfolded during the WNBA's pre-season clash between the Los Angeles Sparks and the Minnesota Lynx at the O2 Arena on Wednesday evening. Metropolitan Police confirmed they were called to the venue following reports that a 12-year-old girl had been hit by a sex toy.
A 34-year-old man was subsequently arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and taken into custody. He has since been released on bail pending further enquiries, with conditions prohibiting him from attending any regulated football or basketball matches.
Game Proceeds Amidst Disturbance
The match, part of the WNBA's international efforts to grow the game, continued despite the disruption. The Minnesota Lynx emerged victorious with an 86-62 win over the Los Angeles Sparks in what was otherwise a successful exhibition of elite women's sport.
An O2 Arena spokesperson expressed deep concern over the incident, stating: "We have a zero-tolerance policy for this type of behaviour. The safety and comfort of our guests is our highest priority."
Growing Concerns Over Fan Conduct
This incident raises further questions about spectator behaviour at major sporting events, following similar disruptions across various sports. Security protocols and crowd management are likely to come under renewed scrutiny after this violation of public decency.
The WNBA, known for its family-friendly atmosphere and strong community values, has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident at its London showcase event.
