Tyrell Malacia is set to hold talks with Manchester United interim head coach Michael Carrick to clarify his immediate future at the club. The 26-year-old was part of the so-called 'bomb squad' alongside Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Antony and Alejandro Garnacho, all of whom secured moves away from Old Trafford over the summer. However, a last-minute switch to Elche for Malacia fell through on deadline day.
Despite being sidelined for two months, Malacia made his return as an unused substitute in the 4-2 victory over Brighton in October. He was included in the next six matchday squads and made a brief two-minute appearance against Newcastle United on Boxing Day. Injuries to other players have also seen him feature for the Under-21s, where he scored during a 45-minute stint against Wolves.
According to The Sun, Malacia is seeking clarity from Carrick before making any final decisions about his future. With his contract at Old Trafford entering its final stretch, a departure in the winter transfer window has not been ruled out, though none of the current options appear to appeal to him. United are not expected to approve any first-team transfers this month.
The imminent return of several key players will provide a boost to Carrick's squad. Bryan Mbeumo and Amad have resumed training after AFCON eliminations, while Noussair Mazraoui is expected back next week following Morocco's run to the final. Harry Maguire also returned last weekend after a two-month injury lay-off, leaving Matthijs de Ligt as the only senior player currently unavailable.
Carrick, who took charge of his first training session at Carrington on Wednesday, expressed his honour at leading the club. 'Having the responsibility to lead Manchester United is an honour,' he said. 'I know what it takes to succeed here; my focus is now on helping the players to reach the standards that we expect at this incredible club.' The 44-year-old will be supported by a backroom team including Steve Holland, Jonathan Woodgate, Travis Binnion, Jonny Evans and Craig Mawson.
