Dagestani heavyweight contender Arslanbek Makhmudov asserts that his extraordinary experience of wrestling a bear will serve as vital preparation for the most significant moment of his career against Tyson Fury. The brawler, known for his unorthodox training techniques, faces Fury at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this Saturday, bringing a reputation built on extreme methods like sledgehammer abdominal strikes and icy cold plunges.
Confronting Fear in the Woods
Nearly two years ago, Makhmudov engaged in a remarkable encounter with a 9-foot-8-inch, 66-stone bear in forests near Moscow, an event he describes as both terrifying and transformative. "It was very terrible. Not just scary, but really crazy terrible," Makhmudov revealed to the Press Association. He explained that this challenge was a personal test to gauge his reactions under extreme pressure, stating, "Since I was a kid I have liked a challenge, that’s why I did that just to test myself to see how I would feel in that crazy situation."
The boxer emphasized the sheer power of the bear, noting, "You only understand its strength when you’re close to it. In one second you can become like meat, just meat, just like that. It’s not comparable with human stuff. It’s like a natural disaster, I cannot explain it, it’s crazy." Despite the danger, Makhmudov believes this experience honed his mental fortitude for boxing, as it taught him to manage emotions and overcome fear. "It is good preparation for boxing because you have to control your emotions and your fear. You have to beat your fear, beat your phobias. For that it was good, but one time is enough!" he added.
From Street Fights to Heavyweight Ambitions
Makhmudov's journey to this pivotal fight is rooted in a lifetime of combat. With a record of 21 wins, including 19 knockouts, his formidable punching power poses a serious threat to Fury. Reflecting on his early years, he shared, "When I was a kid I fought on the streets a lot. From six or seven years old I was fighting bigger or older guys. If I punched someone hard, then I could see on his face that he was finished. So I knew from young that if I punch someone hard, he won’t fight me any more."
This background has shaped his identity as a relentless fighter. "All my life I’ve been fighting. I recognise myself as a fighter. Of course, even in the streets sometimes I lost, but I became stronger. That’s why I think I have enough experience for Tyson Fury, because my life has prepared me for this moment," Makhmudov asserted.
Embracing the Underdog Role
As he approaches the bout, Makhmudov embraces his position as an underdog, viewing it as a motivational advantage. "This is the biggest opportunity in my career. I like to be in this position where people are underestimating me. I’m going to upset everyone," he declared. Acknowledging Fury's legacy, he said, "Tyson Fury is a legend, one of the best heavyweights in history. He’s a big name. But if I want to be the best, I have to beat the best."
With confidence and anticipation, Makhmudov concluded, "I will enjoy this fight. I will enjoy every moment. I will enjoy my win." His unconventional preparation and fearless mindset set the stage for a dramatic heavyweight clash that could redefine his career.
