Swedish Media Hail Alexander Isak After World Cup Masterclass

Swedish media have heaped praise on Liverpool striker Alexander Isak after his standout performance in Sweden's 5-1 World Cup victory over Tunisia. The 26-year-old scored once and provided two assists, earning the man of the match award as Sweden made a dominant return to the World Cup stage for the first time since 2018.

Isak, who endured a frustrating first season at Anfield following his British record transfer from Newcastle United, scored just three league goals and suffered a broken leg in December. However, he recovered in time to secure his World Cup spot and is now using the tournament to impress new Liverpool boss Andoni Iraola.

Swedish publication Aftonbladet reported that Isak “dominated” against Tunisia, with his contributions key as Sweden “crushed” their opponents. The report highlighted how Isak “stole the ball from Tunisia captain Ellyes Skhiri”, leading to Viktor Gyokeres extending Sweden's lead. Isak also flicked on a free-kick for Mattias Svanberg to score late on, putting Sweden “in a golden position” to advance.

Expressen wrote that Isak had “introduced himself again” after overcoming “an injury-plagued season” to score his first World Cup goal in the 30th minute. The outlet noted that Tunisia “lost the ball at a cost” as Isak recovered possession to set up Gyokeres' goal, and that Sweden's performance had “generated something of an echo in the football world”.

Goteborgs-Posten gave Isak “the highest rating”, crediting him for his part in the move leading to Sweden's opener from Yasin Ayari. Summarising his display, the publication wrote: “The attacking star was involved in four goals and showed he is back in earnest after injuries and poor form.”
