Luke Littler Stays on Course for UK Open Defence with Commanding Victory
World number one Luke Littler delivered a dominant performance to defeat two-time world champion Gary Anderson 10-5 in the sixth round of the UK Open darts tournament. The victory at the Butlin's Minehead Resort keeps Littler firmly on track to defend his title, as he advanced to the quarter-finals on finals day.
Littler's Power Scoring Proves Decisive
Littler, who had earlier survived a scare against Kevin Doets in the fifth round, raced into a 4-1 lead against Anderson in the evening session. Anderson, fresh from beating Martin Schindler, briefly threatened a comeback by stealing the seventh leg against the darts. However, Littler quickly reasserted control, moving to a 7-3 advantage at the next interval.
Following the restart, Littler maintained his momentum with relentless heavy scoring, ultimately sealing the match in the 16th leg by pinning tops. He finished with an impressive match average of 101, showcasing the form that has made him the sport's top-ranked player.
Major Upset as Van Gerwen Exits
In a significant upset, world number four Michael van Gerwen was eliminated by fellow three-time champion James Wade. Wade averaged over 105 in a commanding 10-3 victory, booking his place in the quarter-finals and ending van Gerwen's title hopes.
Dramatic Comebacks and Tight Contests
Elsewhere, two-time UK Open runner-up Gerwyn Price produced a remarkable comeback, fighting back from 9-5 down to defeat Ireland's Keane Barry 10-9 in a thrilling encounter. In the opening match of the evening session on the main stage, Josh Rock edged Stephen Bunting 10-7 in a tight contest, finishing with a match average just over 93.
On stage two, Premier League leader Jonny Clayton overcame Martin Lukeman 10-7, hitting eight maximums in the process. Rob Cross also progressed, defeating Daryl Gurney 10-6 to complete the quarter-final lineup.
The stage is now set for a compelling finals day, with Littler aiming to continue his title defence against a field of seasoned challengers.
