LeBron James struggled to contain his emotions during what could be his final NBA game in Cleveland, as the Los Angeles Lakers fell 129-99 to the Cavaliers on Wednesday night at Rocket Arena.
The future Hall of Famer, now in his 23rd season, was honoured with a tribute video and a prolonged standing ovation. James wiped away tears during the video, which highlighted his historic performance in Game 5 of the 2007 Eastern Conference Finals against the Detroit Pistons.
“The moment they put up the tribute video, the Detroit game, looking up in the rafters and I saw our championship banner … it was a lot of reflection,” James said. “Being present in the moment. It got to me a little bit for sure. I was super thankful.”
James finished with 11 points, five assists and six turnovers in his worst performance in a return game, but the stat line was secondary to the night's emotion. He acknowledged that this may have been his final game in Cleveland, saying, “I haven’t made a decision on the future, but it very well could be.”
The night was made more special by the presence of his son and Lakers teammate Bronny James, who scored eight points. “It was pretty cool just sitting over there and watching him continue to live out his dream,” James said. Bronny added, “It got him. It almost got me.”
James’s mother, Gloria, also attended, watching both her son and grandson play. The crowd offered gratitude rather than demands, recognising they may have witnessed the end of an era.
