In a dramatic U-turn, Spanish football authorities have shelved plans to stage a regular-season LaLiga match in Miami this December following intense opposition from across the football world.
The proposed fixture between Villarreal and Barcelona, which was set to take place at the Hard Rock Stadium on December 6th, has been officially postponed after meeting fierce resistance from supporters' groups, clubs, and football governing bodies.
Growing Opposition Forces Change of Heart
LaLiga's ambitious attempt to export domestic matches overseas faced mounting criticism since the plans were first announced. Traditionalists argued that moving league fixtures abroad undermines the integrity of the competition and shows disregard for local fans who regularly attend matches.
The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) had already expressed serious reservations about the proposal, while players' unions and fan groups organised coordinated campaigns against what they described as 'football tourism' that prioritises commercial interests over sporting values.
Not the First Overseas Attempt
This isn't LaLiga's first attempt to stage matches in the United States. Back in 2018, the league had planned a fixture between Barcelona and Girona in Miami, but that too was eventually called off after similar opposition.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas has been a vocal advocate for expanding the league's global footprint, arguing that international matches are crucial for competing with the Premier League's worldwide appeal and commercial success.
What Happens Next?
While the match has been officially postponed rather than cancelled, insiders suggest the concept faces an uncertain future. The sheer scale of opposition indicates that any future attempts to move LaLiga fixtures overseas will encounter similar resistance.
Both Villarreal and Barcelona will now need to reschedule the fixture for a traditional Spanish venue, though no alternative date or location has been confirmed at this stage.
The decision represents a significant victory for traditionalists in football and serves as a reminder that despite the sport's increasing commercialisation, fan power and sporting integrity still hold considerable influence.
