Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate is close to finalising a new contract with the club, offering a significant lift to their summer transfer strategy despite what he described as a "tough year." The France international, whose current deal was set to expire in June, has been in discussions with club officials for months, with speculation earlier linking him to Real Madrid.
Contract Talks Progress After Months of Uncertainty
Konate revealed that he indicated his willingness to sign a new deal at the start of the campaign, and after prolonged negotiations, an agreement now appears imminent. Speaking after Liverpool's 2-1 Merseyside derby victory at Everton, the 26-year-old said, "My future? To be fair, there are many things people have said but for a long time we have spoken with the club and we are close to an agreement." He added, "I think everyone wished for that for as long as possible but we are in a good way. For sure there is a big chance I'm here next season. This is what I always wanted."
Personal Challenges and Sacrifices
The centre-back acknowledged the difficulties of the past season, which included the death of his father in January, saying, "It was a tough year and I think if everyone knew exactly what happened to me, they could understand many things, which kind of sacrifices I've done for this club." He emphasised focusing on securing Champions League qualification before reflecting on the season, noting it will be "a big part of my story."
Impact on Liverpool's Transfer Plans
Securing Konate's future will allow Liverpool to avoid the immediate need to sign a new centre-back this summer. The club has already arranged for Renne's Jeremy Jacquet to arrive in a £60 million deal, and 19-year-old Giovanni Leoni is set to return from an ACL injury. With Joe Gomez potentially leaving due to injury struggles and captain Virgil van Dijk entering the final year of his contract, retaining Konate provides stability, enabling resources to be directed towards strengthening other areas such as forward positions, midfield, and possibly left-back.
Leadership Role and Future Ambitions
Konate expressed his readiness to take on a more prominent leadership role next season, especially with key players like Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson departing. "The legends are going to leave one day and after it's going to be our turn to take the lead. I started this already and it's a big responsibility but I need the help of everyone as well," he stated. Reflecting on Liverpool's performance, he added, "It's been a bad season for the standards of Liverpool. If we finish in the top four, we won't be happy. For sure with this kind of a season, we have to give our all next season to make something good."
Other Contract Situations at Liverpool
Meanwhile, midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai, whose contract expires in 2028, remains calm about his own negotiations. The Hungary captain said, "There has been no real progression. Of course I see myself here in the long term but, as I say, it is not really in my hands any more. I'm completely relaxed." This highlights the ongoing contract dynamics within the squad as Liverpool plan for the future.
