Jurgen Klopp is set to make a highly anticipated return to the Anfield dugout this weekend, joining the coaching staff for a legends charity match between Liverpool and Borussia Dortmund. The event, organised by the LFC Foundation, will see the former Reds boss back on the touchline for the first time since his departure in 2024, sparking fresh speculation about a potential return to management at the club.
Legendary Status and Departure
Having taken charge at Liverpool in 2015, Klopp cemented his legendary status during a near nine-year spell, steering the club to eight trophies, including the Premier League and Champions League. He departed on his own terms in 2024 after almost 500 matches as manager, succeeded by Arne Slot, who clinched the top-flight title in his debut season, though results have been inconsistent this campaign.
Aldridge's Plans for the Event
Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge, who will be part of the coaching staff alongside Klopp, Sir Kenny Dalglish, and Ian Rush, revealed his intention to ask Klopp about a potential return as Reds manager. Speaking to BOYLE Sports, Aldridge said, "I'm on the staff with Jurgen Klopp, so I'm going to ask him [to come back]! I think we've moved on from Jurgen, but we'd love him back if Arne Slot were to go."
Aldridge praised Klopp's impact, describing his passion as "Bill Shankly-esque" and noting that fans would welcome his return if Slot were to leave. However, he acknowledged the complexities, adding, "But it doesn't work like that, does it? If he wanted to go to Real Madrid, then good luck to him."
Rumours and Klopp's Response
Speculation about Klopp's return to management has been rife, with rumours suggesting Real Madrid had contacted him about taking charge at the Bernabeu. However, Klopp dismissed these claims at the Magenta TV World Cup team presentation in Munich, stating, "If Real Madrid had called, we would have heard about it by now. But that is all nonsense. They did not even call, not once."
He further clarified his current stance, saying, "I've said that a thousand times already, but of course I'm not thinking about it at all right now. There's no reason to, thankfully." Regarding his future, Klopp hinted at a possible return to coaching, remarking, "And as for the future, I'm not quite finished as a coach yet. So who knows what might come up in the next few years? But there are absolutely no plans in that regard."
Current Role and Match Details
Since January 2025, Klopp has served as Red Bull's Global Head of Soccer, but he will temporarily step back into a coaching role for Saturday's charity fixture. The match, kicking off at 3:00pm, will feature Liverpool Legends including Steven Gerrard, Peter Crouch, Dirk Kuyt, and Thiago Alcantara, with Klopp taking charge from the dugout.
This event not only celebrates Klopp's legacy but also fuels ongoing discussions about his managerial future, as fans and pundits alike watch closely for any hints of a comeback in the football world.
