Football's power couple, Sam Kerr and Kristie Mewis, are sharing intimate details of their upcoming nuptials as the countdown to their New Year's Eve wedding in Perth begins. The Matildas captain will marry her long-term partner and mother of their son, Jagger, in a ceremony set to be both stylish and emotionally charged.
Wedding Attire and Family Roles Revealed
Speaking on the Mewis Squared podcast with her sister, Kristie Mewis disclosed that she and Sam Kerr will be wearing matching suits for the big day. Their young son, Jagger, will also be dressed in a miniature version of the outfit, creating a coordinated family look. "He's probably going to be wearing a little matching outfit with her, it's going to be absolutely adorable," Mewis said.
While the exact location in Perth remains a closely guarded secret, Mewis confirmed the wedding will be a significant event with approximately 120 guests in attendance. The scale is causing some pre-wedding nerves for the 34-year-old American star. "For me to wrap my head around talking to 120 people in one night is a lot," she admitted, stressing about having enough time for everyone.
Jagger will have a sweet, if informal, role in the proceedings. Mewis explained that while he's a bit too young for a formal duty, Kerr will walk down the aisle with him. "That is going to be gut-wrenching for me, I will sob when that happens," she shared.
A Union Forged on the Pitch
The couple's relationship has a unique origin story, beginning privately in 2019 after they first met as international opponents for Australia and the United States. Their romance developed alongside demanding professional schedules, becoming public knowledge around the Tokyo Olympics in 2021.
Their journey has included long periods of separation due to Kerr's move to Chelsea and Mewis's career across the US and Europe, as well as significant personal challenges. Mewis stood by Kerr during a high-profile UK court case in 2023, where Kerr was ultimately found not guilty of racially aggravated harassment, and during Kerr's subsequent recovery from a serious ACL injury.
Looking to a Hot Australian Future
One practical concern for the couple is the intense Perth summer heat, with temperatures potentially reaching 35 degrees Celsius (95°F) on their wedding day. "It is going to be a very hot Australian summer," Mewis noted, comparing it to her experiences in Boston.
Looking beyond the wedding day, the couple are expected to postpone their honeymoon until mid-2025, with hopes of combining it with travel to the Men's World Cup in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Their union, celebrated with family and friends in Kerr's hometown, marks the latest chapter for one of football's most celebrated couples, who welcomed their son Jagger in 2024.
