England winger Katie Robinson is set to make a surprise transfer from Aston Villa to Bristol City, according to sources. The 23-year-old has completed a medical ahead of a move that represents a significant statement of intent from the Women's Super League 2 club.
Robinson, who earned her first England cap in 2022 and was the youngest member of the squad at the 2023 World Cup, began her career at Bristol City before moving to Brighton. She joined Aston Villa in 2024 and spent the first half of this season on loan at Everton, making 12 appearances before returning to Villa in January.
Bristol City identified Robinson as a priority target, with backing from majority owner Mercury13. The investment group, which also owns Como Women, purchased the women's team from Bristol Sport in September and has pledged to usher in a 'new era'. The transfer fee is believed to be significant for a second-tier side.
City are third in WSL2, occupying the playoff spot and three points off automatic promotion. They are close to further signings, having already secured former Wales captain Sophie Ingle on a free transfer in August. This season, two WSL2 teams will be promoted automatically, with a third facing a playoff against the bottom WSL side.
Several WSL2 clubs are expected to spend heavily in the January window to push for promotion. Meanwhile, Ipswich, who are bottom of the table and five points from safety, have parted ways with long-serving manager Joe Sheehan, with David Wright taking interim charge.
