Manchester United wonderkid JJ Gabriel has learned when he could make his senior debut after the club finalized their pre-season plans. The 15-year-old, who scored 21 goals in 23 games for the under-18s last season, will be part of United's pre-season tour of mainland Europe.
As Gabriel was 14 when the 2025-26 season began, he was ineligible to play for the first team in the Premier League. However, with no age restrictions now, he could become one of the youngest players in Premier League history next season. The club is keen to showcase a clear pathway to the first team, especially with many stars still recovering from the World Cup.
Pre-season schedule and Gabriel's involvement
United's pre-season begins with a clash against Wrexham in Helsinki on July 18, followed by a match against Rosenborg in Trondheim, Norway on July 25. They then play two fixtures in Sweden: Atletico Madrid in the Snapdragon Cup in Stockholm on August 1 and European champions Paris St Germain in Gothenburg on August 8. A friendly against Leeds in Dublin on August 12 precedes the prestigious match against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland on August 15.
Gabriel is likely to feature in the early friendlies and could earn more playing time if he impresses. By the time of the Milan match, United's World Cup stars are expected to have returned.
Carrick's praise and patience
Michael Carrick, who invited Gabriel to train with the first team last season, spoke highly of the youngster in March. "He is not allowed to be part of a first-team squad on a matchday. He's too young," Carrick said. "JJ's doing really well. We've got some really good players in the academy and we try and get the younger players up as much as we can. JJ is a big talent, it is pretty obvious and he has had a good season for U18s. We think an awful lot of him. But patience is important in managing everything that comes with that and developing him and picking the right moment to step up."
Director's comments on tour
Director of football Jason Wilcox said: "With fixtures now confirmed across five countries and six fantastic cities, these matches will provide strong preparation for the 2026-27 season and a valuable opportunity to connect with our incredible fans across Europe. Their support will be vital as we build momentum."
