James Milner, the Premier League's all-time appearance record holder, has announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 40. The midfielder's career spanned 24 seasons in the top flight, during which he made 658 appearances for six clubs and earned 61 England caps. His journey began at Leeds United, where at 16 years and 356 days he became the league's youngest ever goalscorer.
Milner's professionalism and dedication were hallmarks of his longevity. Former Manchester City teammate Nedum Onuoha described him as 'ahead of the curve' in terms of fitness and preparation. At City, Milner won two Premier League titles, an FA Cup and a League Cup. Manager Manuel Pellegrini called him 'the most complete player in England'. Milner even learned Spanish to communicate better with teammates and later insisted his children speak only Spanish at home to aid their fluency.
After moving to Liverpool in 2015, Milner added another Premier League title, another FA Cup and League Cup, and a Champions League winners' medal. He then spent three seasons at Brighton, helping the club qualify for European competition for the second time in their history. Throughout his career, Milner's versatility saw him play as a full-back, winger, and emergency centre-forward, as well as his preferred central midfield role.
Milner's humility and fierce competitiveness were also key factors. As a 16-year-old YTS trainee on £70 a week, he cleaned the first-team dressing room after matches in which he had played. At Newcastle, he dethroned goalkeeper Steve Harper as the club's darts champion, earning the nickname 'Machine Gun Milner'. Former Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson spoke of Milner's 'unique mentality' and described him as one of the few people he trusts 100%.
In his retirement statement, Milner said: 'After 24 seasons in the Premier League, it feels like the right time to bring an end to my playing career. I could never have dreamed of the journey I've been on.' He added that the friendships he made were more important than trophies or records. Onuoha summed up Milner's impact: 'He's the glue that holds stuff together; the complete package.'
