Liverpool have agreed a British-record £125 million fee with Newcastle United for striker Alexander Isak, who is set to undergo a medical on Monday. The Sweden international is expected to sign a six-year contract worth £300,000 per week, ending a protracted transfer saga that saw the player down tools to force a move.
Newcastle initially rejected a £110 million bid on 1 August and insisted Isak was not for sale. However, the striker's subsequent strike and public statements, coupled with Newcastle's signing of Nick Woltemade and pursuits of Yoane Wissa or Jørgen Strand Larsen, prompted Liverpool to submit a higher offer on Sunday night. The fixed fee of £125 million includes no add-ons, though a loyalty payment saving effectively makes the deal worth £130 million to Newcastle.
Isak had been absent from Newcastle's pre-season tour of Asia with a reported thigh injury, later training alone at former club Real Sociedad. He accused Newcastle of breaking a commitment that he could leave if a suitable offer arrived from a big club and refused to reopen contract negotiations last week.
The deal marks the second time this summer Liverpool have broken their own transfer record, following the £100 million plus £16 million in add-ons for Florian Wirtz in June. Liverpool's total summer spending will exceed £440 million, offset by over £210 million in player sales. The club may raise additional funds by selling Harvey Elliott or Joe Gomez on deadline day, with Aston Villa interested in Elliott and Milan making a €15 million offer for Gomez.
