In a significant coaching move within college basketball, Bryan Hodgson has departed the University of South Florida to assume the role of head coach for the Providence Friars men's basketball team. This transition occurs mere days after USF's elimination from the NCAA Tournament, commonly known as March Madness.
Providence Announces Hodgson as New Leader
Providence College officially confirmed Hodgson's appointment on Sunday, naming him the program's 17th head coach in its history. He succeeds Kim English, whose three-year tenure concluded earlier this month following a defeat to St. John's in the Big East Tournament quarterfinals.
Hodgson's Recent Success at South Florida
During his time at South Florida, Hodgson achieved notable success by guiding the Bulls to their first NCAA Tournament appearance since the 2011-12 season. Under his leadership, the team compiled an impressive 25-9 record, securing both the American Conference's regular-season championship and the conference tournament title.
This performance earned USF an automatic bid to March Madness, though their campaign ended abruptly with an 83-79 loss to Louisville in the opening round. Prior to his stint at South Florida, Hodgson spent two seasons at Arkansas State, where he amassed a 45-28 record, further solidifying his coaching credentials.
Statements from Providence and Hodgson
Providence's president, the Reverend Kenneth Sicard, expressed confidence in the new appointment, stating, 'Bryan brings a strong track record of leadership and a deep commitment to developing student-athletes both on and off the court. I am confident that the future is bright for Friar men's basketball, and I eagerly anticipate seeing the team reach new milestones under their new leader's guidance.'
In his own remarks, Hodgson highlighted the appeal of the Providence program, saying, 'This is a program with a proud tradition, passionate fan base, and a city that truly embraces its team. We're going to build something that reflects that pride. We will be tough, disciplined, and relentless in our pursuit of excellence.'
Looking Ahead for Providence Basketball
The coaching change marks a pivotal moment for Providence as they seek to build on their basketball legacy. Hodgson's proven ability to elevate programs, demonstrated through his recent achievements at South Florida and earlier at Arkansas State, positions him as a key figure in driving the Friars forward in competitive collegiate athletics.
