Masters Final Round Erupts in Controversy as Tyrrell Hatton Blasts Augusta Course
In a dramatic display of frustration, LIV Golf star Tyrrell Hatton let loose with an explosive, expletive-laden outburst directed at the hallowed grounds of Augusta National during his final round at the Masters on Sunday. The incident occurred after a costly missed putt, casting a spotlight on the intense pressures and challenging conditions faced by competitors at one of golf's most prestigious tournaments.
A Costly Error Sparks Fury on the Fourth Hole
Entering the day at 4-under par, following a level-par performance on Saturday and an impressive 66 on Friday, Hatton began his final round with promise, securing a birdie on the par-5 second hole. However, his momentum was abruptly halted at the 251-yard par-3 fourth, where a series of missteps led to a significant setback. After his tee shot landed just off the green, Hatton faced what should have been a straightforward two-putt for a player of his caliber.
Unfortunately, his first attempt left the ball roughly three feet from the hole, and in a moment of sheer frustration, his subsequent putt caught the lip, refusing to drop. The 34-year-old Englishman, known for his occasional fiery temperament, was visibly incensed, shaking his head and muttering under his breath before finally holing out on his fourth attempt.
"This Place Is F------ Bulls---": Hatton's Heated Reaction
The simmering anger boiled over as Hatton returned his putter, erupting with the words, "This place is f------ bulls---." This outburst was not an isolated incident during the tense final round. Remarkably, spectators were treated to another expletive-laden reaction moments later when Wyndham Clark, in the subsequent group, made a nearly identical blunder. After his par putt also caught the lip, resulting in a bogey, Clark yelled, 'F---!' adding to the day's dramatic atmosphere.
Course Conditions Under Scrutiny as Players Struggle
Hatton's difficulties on the fourth hole may have been exacerbated by the rock-hard greens baking under the intense Augusta heat, a challenge echoed by fellow competitors. Despite carding a 4-under round, LIV Golf teammate Jon Rahm experienced three bogeys, later commenting that he had never seen Augusta National play this firm before. "Definitely some things I'm going change going forward," Rahm stated after his final round, which left him 1-over for the tournament. "Preparation-wise and what to do. But it's hard to say how much I learned because I don't think we ever seen a Masters this firm and I don't know how long it's going to be until we do again. Both off the tee and on the greens."
Rahm further highlighted the extreme conditions, noting, "Have you ever seen looking down the property how yellow the patron areas and how brown and purple parts of the greens and fairways are? It will be a long time until we see it like this. Definitely have some things in mind for future editions where it gets to this level."
Hatton Recovers to Take Clubhouse Lead Amidst Turmoil
Despite the early setback, Hatton's round saw a notable improvement shortly after his outburst. A hole-out eagle on the seventh hole, followed by a birdie on the eighth, lifted his spirits and propelled him back into contention. He ultimately finished on -10, securing the clubhouse lead and setting a competitive target for those following, including Rory McIlroy and Justin Rose, who continued their rounds under the watchful eyes of the golfing world.
This incident underscores the high-stakes environment of the Masters, where even seasoned professionals can be pushed to their limits by the demanding course conditions and the weight of expectation. Hatton's outburst, while controversial, has sparked conversations about player conduct and the unique challenges posed by Augusta National, ensuring that this year's tournament will be remembered for more than just the final leaderboard.
