Kane Eyes Pele's Record as England Captain Targets World Cup Glory
Harry Kane closing in on Pele's international goal record

England captain Harry Kane stands on the precipice of footballing immortality, poised to equal a legendary goalscoring record held by the great Pele. With 76 international goals to his name, the Bayern Munich striker requires just one more to draw level with the Brazilian icon's tally of 77.

Chasing Legends

Kane has already rewritten the history books for both England and Tottenham Hotspur, becoming their all-time leading scorer. Now wearing the famous number nine shirt at Bayern Munich previously filled by goalscoring greats Gerd Muller and Robert Lewandowski, the 31-year-old continues his relentless pursuit of excellence. Facing Albania on Sunday presents the perfect opportunity to join Pele in the record books, having already scored five times against them in previous encounters.

"To be around a name like Pele speaks for itself," Kane admitted. "Sometimes when you're in it, it's hard to process some of the names you're around or the things you're achieving. You just want to go onto the next one. Hopefully to score and go level with Pele, who had such an inspirational international career, just shows how far I've come through my career."

World Cup Dreams and Ballon d'Or Ambitions

While individual records matter, Kane's focus remains firmly fixed on team success, particularly England's quest for World Cup glory in 2026. The tournament will be partially hosted in Mexico, where Pele famously led Brazil to victory in 1970. Kane sees the parallels but understands that true greatness is measured in trophies rather than mere statistics.

"Ultimately I could score 100 goals this season but if I don't win the Champions League or the World Cup, you're probably not going to win the Ballon d'Or," he reflected. "It's the same with [Erling] Haaland, it's the same with any player. You have to be winning those major trophies."

Kane expressed confidence in both his club and national teams, noting that Bayern Munich appear "one of the favourites for the Champions League" while England enter the World Cup as serious contenders. His optimism is backed by perfect records in World Cup qualifying and Champions League group stages.

Tuchel's Influence and Physical Transformation

The England captain revealed the crucial role manager Thomas Tuchel played in his move to Bayern Munich. "He was the main reason why I ended up going to Bayern Munich, first and foremost," Kane disclosed. "I love his energy, I love what he wanted to do and how he wanted to play. So, having that relationship from the first moment I met him sets up you on a good path."

This partnership has revitalised Kane's international form, contrasting sharply with his condition during Euro 2024. "There was a lot of talk about where I was physically, going into the last tournament," he recalled. "And if I compare it to how I feel now, I'd say I'm definitely fitter and sharper now. That was maybe off the back of a couple of little injuries that I picked up towards the end of the season."

Kane, now a Bundesliga winner after his long wait for silverware, appears to be hitting peak form at the perfect moment. His performance in Bayern's victory over Paris Saint-Germain, where he found the net, reinforced their status as European contenders.

American-Style Preparation for Global Success

Drawing inspiration from American football legend Tom Brady, Kane revealed England's innovative approach to set-piece preparation. The team is developing an "NFL playbook" style system for dead-ball situations, recognising their crucial importance in tournament football.

"We want to build a book of set plays where we can go into the tournament where there is not a lot of time to practice it," Kane explained. "You want to also have like an NFL playbook in a way where you look at the opposition and see if they are zonal or man-mark and we can pick what we want to do and ultimately, the best team at set plays normally go on to be the best team in the tournament."

The significance isn't lost that the World Cup final will be held at MetLife Stadium, home to NFL teams the New York Jets and Giants. Pele himself later played in New York for the Cosmos. If Kane can emulate the Brazilian by lifting the World Cup, he will likely have surpassed his goalscoring record along the way.

England face Albania in their World Cup qualifier on Sunday at 5pm, with coverage on ITV1. All eyes will be on Kane as he continues his remarkable journey from Tottenham hero to potential world beater.
